Flag service offered in Coweta by American Legion Post 226

Ten days out of every year, American flags are placed along Coweta streets and roadways in tribute to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces. The flag service is a project of Coweta American Legion Post 226 and is offered to local businesses and residents on federal holidays unless inclement weather is underway.

Post 226 Commander Mike Walker said some 150-175 flags are set out along a number of routes that extend across the community and as far away as Oneta Road on Highway 51. While most are placed at subscribing businesses, some are placed at subscribing residential homes as well.

Designated holidays include Independence Day in July, Labor Day and Patriots Day in September, Veterans Day in November, Pearl Harbor Day in December, Martin Luther King Day in January, Presidents Day in February, Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day in May and Flag Day in June.

Walker said the annual subscription fee is $30 and can be started at any time of the year. If a flag hole is needed, the post members will install one.

Fees are used in part to support post upkeep, provide veteran assistance, scholarships, support for youth and children and other community activities.
